IMPORTANT INFORMATION: OUR NUT-AWARE APPROACH (16/03/26)

16 March 2026 (by Hyndburn Park (Technician))

An update on our nut‑aware approach, reminding families to avoid nut products to help keep pupils with allergies safe. Full details are in the linked letter.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: OUR NUT-AWARE APPROACH (16/03/26)

Dear Parents and Carers,

As part of our ongoing commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing, we are writing to clarify our approach to managing food allergies within school. We have a number of pupils with diagnosed food allergies, including severe allergies that may result in anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that requires immediate treatment.

While it is not possible for any school to guarantee a completely allergen-free environment, we are committed to minimising risk and maintaining a strong culture of allergy awareness, vigilance and shared responsibility.

Nut-Aware Approach

The school operates as a nut-aware school. We respectfully request that parents and carers do not send food containing nuts or nut-based products into school, including items such as peanut butter, chocolate spreads containing nuts, cereal bars with nuts, and products labelled as containing nuts. We ask that you check ingredient labels carefully.

Although we take reasonable steps to reduce the presence of nuts, we cannot guarantee that the school site is entirely nut-free. For this reason, staff are trained annually in allergy awareness and in recognising and responding to allergic reactions, including the administration of adrenaline auto-injectors.

Our Safety Measures Include:

  • Individual Healthcare Plans for pupils with diagnosed allergies.
  • Staff training in allergy awareness and emergency response.
  • Clear procedures for managing allergic reactions.
  • A no food-sharing expectation.
  • Careful consideration of allergens during school activities and trips.

Supporting a safe environment is a shared responsibility. We ask all families to support this approach by avoiding nut-based products in packed lunches and snacks.

If your child has a diagnosed allergy, please ensure the school office has up-to-date medical information and that any prescribed medication is in date and provided in accordance with their Individual Healthcare Plan.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all pupils.

Yours sincerely,

Mr J. Astley

Assistant Headteacher
